Kafu Nagai was born in Kanatomi-cho of Koishikawa Ward, Tokyo, in December of the 12th year of Meiji (1879). Nor only did he stop by Koishikawa even after he had travelled abroad, but he also wrote, in his essay Dentsuin, that one could not forget a worldly corner where one had been born. Koishikawa is topographically one of 5 heights of uptown Tokyo, undulated as Akasaka, Asabu and Hongo. Needless to say, it is not so prosperous as downtown Tokyo. But Kafu had a warm feeling for this place till late in his life. The house of his real mother, at Shitayatake-cho, is also another unforgettable home in his memory : he spent a few years of his infancy there and strongly loved that place, too. Shitaya is known as a town in the vicinity of Akasaka. His memorial essay Shitaya no Ie (A House at Shitaya), describes in detail the place : The Washizu familly on my maternal side belonged to the privileged classes and its house was furnished with a grand gate like that of a samurai's residence though it was located in downtown Tokyo. In this essay, I will try to reproduce Kafu's memorial home from his above works, and discuss the meaning of "urban space" as the base of his literature. In addition I will ponder over "Topos", which is inevitably related to his narration, making space in his narratives.
