Tokyo made its appearance as a modern city after the conflagration of Ginza in February of the 5th year of Meiji (1972). The Fire caused widespread damage to Ginza, reaching as far as the foreign settlements in neighboring Kobiki-cho and Tsukiji. However, a few years later due to the prompt reconstruction of the government, incombustible brick streets were newly laid there. Nagai Kafu criticized Westernized Ginza and its buildings as a symbol of civilization and enlightenment; nevertheless he often but irregularly enjoyed taking a walk out to Ginza. He continued these walks to the end of his life. He did not dislike the fact that Ginza was a shady and obscene city (except for its Western main streets). In this essay, I will search out Kafu's point of urban space, relating to his love and hatred of Ginza's streets before the Kanto earthquake.
