The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between sports and education in the Great Britain. For this purpose, we need to focus on the process of how sports had been systematically formed into physical education in British schools. Although Great Britain is said to be the first nation which systematized sports, it was relatively late (in history) when sports were incorporated into school curriculum as compared with other subjects. In the school education in England, it was mainly the students of so called "public schools" (private schools) who enjoyed sports. Thereafter, in the latter part of the 19th century, sports were incorporated into the curriculum of ordinary schools (comprehensive schools) established by local authorities. At the time, there were two kinds of physical education programs. One was organized games in the public schools, and the other was physical training in the ordinary schools. After World War II, there has been great changes in the physical education program. In the 1980s, the Thatcher Administration promoted various educational reforms, and set up the "Education Reform Act 1988." Under this act, the "National Standardized Curriculum" was introduced for the first time, and the physical education became the compulsory subject. As a preparatory work for considering how the physical education should be conducted in schools in the future, in this paper, the author will examine the case of Great Britain, and will review the process of how the physical education has been systematized, the current relationship between people and sports, and the details of what composes the physical education in the National Standardized Curriculum.
