1. These experiments were carried out in order to know the effcts of leaves on the adventitious root formation in cuttings of Glycine Max Merrill var Okuhara Edamame. 2. Cuttings with leaves formed much more roots than ones without leaves. The presence of leaves accelarated the elongation of roots as compared with the increase of the number of roots. 3. The effect of the cuttings on the acceleration of roots formation was larger in the lower leaves than in the upper ones. In either case the number of roots increased markedly when the cuttings were treated by NAA. The number and elongation of roots grew with the increase of the number of leaves, but those per unit area of leaves decreased with the increase of the area of leaves. These observations show that there is the optimal area of leaves which is most effective for the promotion of root formation in cuttings. 4. The rooting was better in older lower cuttings than in younger upper ones. It shows that potential rooting power is higher in lower stem cuttings. 5. It might not be correlative with the rooting of the cuttings that leaves were existent before the harvesting of cuttings, because the number and elongation of roots scarcely changed in spite of the prolongation of the period of defoliation before the harvesting of cuttings. 6. The number and elongation of roots increased in proportion to the prolongation of the days with leaves after the harvesting of cuttings. Accordingly, it is considered from these sesults that a root-promoting substance moves slowly from leaves to stem after harvesting cuttings.
