In this paper, the spacing height characteristics of foil in web handling systems are examined theoretically and experimentally. In the theoretical analysis, the two-dimensional Reynolds equation and foil equilibrium equation are discretized by the finite element method and solved iteratively to calculate the pressure and foil spacing height distributions for various parameters. Based on the numerical results, the simplified convenience formula for the foil spacing height at the central position of foil bearing, which includes the foil width as a parameter, is obtained. On the other hand, in the experiments, the foil spacing height at the central position of foil bearing is measured optically for various combinations of foil wrap angle, foil tension and foil moving velocity. The experimental results are compared with the calculated results obtained from the simplified formula mentioned above, and fairly good agreements are seen between them.
