Hydrodynamic gas film bearings are used for supporting high-speed rotating machinery. Especially, stepped gas bearings are widely used for such machinery because of their simple structure, high load carrying capacity and high stability. In this paper, the static and dynamic characteristics of stepped thrust gas bearings are theoretically examined for a wide range of operating conditions. Applying the generalized Reynolds equation considering gas film compressibility, the static and dynamic pressure components in the bearing gap are obtained numerically. Then, integrating these pressure components, the load carrying capacity, friction torque, spring and damping coefficients of gas film and dynamic response of rotor-bearing system are calculated. The results obtained are compared with the results by the conventional Reynolds equation neglecting the compressibility of gas film.
