In driving micro-machines, it is difficult to give them sufficient motions by using conventional actuators, because the machines are subjected to significant friction forces relative to inertia forces. On the other hand, small size flying-insects such as fly, mosquito and bee easily overcome this problem by making use of self-excited vibration of wings. In this paper, a fundamental mechanism of motions of such insect's wings was analyzed in order to apply the excellent mechanism of motions of their wings to a method to drive micro-machines. In the analysis, the wing of small size flying-insect with indirect-flying-muscle was described as dynamic model of two-degree-of-freedom system, and van der Pol type input was assumed as driving force of wing. Moreover, the self-excited vibration analysis was performed by applying the averaging method to the dynamic model. As a result, the existence condition and stability condition for the limit cycle of self-excited vibration were clarified.
