This paper describes a general method to solve the optimum design problems of finite width hydrodynamic journal bearings operated in both laminar and turbulent flow regimes based on the mathematical programming. Before formulating the optimum design problems, the closed form analytical solutions for the pressure distribution, load carrying capacity, friction force, temperature rise and whirl onset velocity, which are used in design formulae, are derived from the modifled turbulent Reynolds equation by applying the perturbation tehcnique. Then, applying the analytical solutions, the design variables such as radial clearance, length-to-diameter ratio and averaged viscosity of lubricant, which optimize the objective function given by a weighted sum of fluid film temperature rise and the flow rate, are determined for a wide range of journal rotational speeds under various constraints. From the results obtained, the characteristics of optimized values are clarified.
