Screw-type compressores, which are mainly used for large refrigerator, consist of two mating grooved rotors. These two rotors are supported horizontally by four journal bearings lubricated with a low viscosity oil including a large amount of refrigerant. In the operation of such rotors, a large cavitation zone may be formed in the bearing gap, and it causes a reduction in the load carrying capacity. Therefore, in order to break the cavitation zone, partial journal bearings with three pads are usually used. In this study, the dynamic characteristics of rotors for screw-type compressors supported by partial journal bearings with three pads are investigated theoretically and experimentally. Applying the turbulent Reynolds equation, the stability conditions for the rotor is examined. Moreover, the theoretical results of rotor motion trajectories subjected to cyclic compressed pressure variation are compared with the experimental results. Fairly good agreement is seen in both results.
