A Model of High Energy Tail Formation of an Ion Distribution in Turbulent Plasma Heating

Ion heating by strong ion wave turbulence is theoretically considered. It is assumed that the electron temperature T_e and the ion temperature T_i are initially close so that the linear Landau damping of ion waves is fairly strong. It is also assumed that T_e increases in time in a way that a region of the resonant diffusion in velocity space gradually moves to higher velocity region, so that the resonant ions are accelerated for a relatively long time. An equation based on the above model is presented and is analytically solved. Under plausible assumptions we find the tail distribution is proportional to exp (-v/u_0), where u_0 is the trapping velocity defined by Dupree.
