Several water maze tasks are widely used as tests for behavioral and learning abilities in teratology studies. Through such tasks many animals can be examined in a relatively short time using a simple apparatus without inflicting stress such as food deprivation in the growing period and electric shocks in escape learning tasks. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the learning ability of SHR, SHRSP and WKY mature male rats bred in our laboratory, by using several water maze tasks. SHR and SHRSP showed the more excellent learning abilities as indicated in the increase of rats with the correct response ratio in the single water T-, underwater T- and water E- maze tasks compared to WKY. In the Biel maze task, SHR showed an increase of the correct response ratio in comparison with SHRSP and WKY. In the Morris maze task, SHR and SHRSP showed a higher ability of the acquisition then WKY. In the probe trial, SHR and WKY stayed more frequently in the zone where the escape platform had been set, compared to SHRSP. In conclusion, SHR showed higher acquisition learning as compared to WKY in all water maze tasks. The spatial learining in the Morris maze task of SHR was similar to that of WKY. Though the learning ability of SHRSP was higher in acquisition trials as compared to WKY, at the water maze tasks except for the Biel maze, the spatial learning of SHRSP was lower than the other two strains. The acquisition learning tasks demonstrated behavioral characteristics associated with the hypertension in SHR and SHRSP. The lower spatial learning ability in SHRSP is considered to be due to dysfunction of the hippocampus caused by a circulatory disorder of the brain. These findings present the fundamental data for the water maze tasks in the behavioral and learning teratological studies using SHR and SHRSP.
