Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) was performed on 220 patients with upper urinary tract stones. Between September 1988 and May 1989,258 consective treatments were performed at our hospital by using the Lithostar (Siemens), multifunctional lithotriptor unit. Three months after ESWL, 83% of patients underwent a single treatment session were stone free, and 13% of them had residual fragments of stones that were less than 4mm in diameter and were considered easy to discharge. ESWL was a very effective and safe procedure for removing stones of the upper urinary tract.
