Transrectal ultrasonotomography of the prostate was performed on 1900 cases in our clinic. The usefulness of this examination was assessed by the following criteria : preoperative evaluation of the prostatic volume and the differential diagnosis of prostatic carcinoma and prostatitis. Three measurements were made to estimate prostatic volume. These were the maximum anteroposterior length (A), the maximum left-to-right length (B), and the cranio-caudal length (C). The result obtained by multiplying A, B and C was compared with the actual weight of the adenoma enucleated by retropubic prostatectomy, which gave a good correlation (r=0.9378). Ultrasonotomography clearly distinguished prostatic carcinoma from prostatitis.
