Postural Adjustments During Bilateral Shoulder Movements

Five healthy subjects standing on a force platform rapidly performed forward movements of their right (Rt) arm together with backward movements of the left (Lt) arm, which induced rotational perturbation of the trunk. Under various tasks in the movements, the tangential acceleration of the arms and the platform torque around the vertical axis were changed in their durations and magnitudes, in which the acceleration and deceleration of the arms were respectively associated with the initial and later phases of the torque. The initiation of the Lt hamstring (Ham) EMGs was linked with that of the later-phase torque, and to a lesser degree with the arm deceleration. The integrated EMGs of the Lt Ham correlated with the integrated torque of the later phase but not with that of the initial phase. The results suggested that the force elicited by the arm deceleration was reflected in the later-phase torque, and the central nervous system adjusted the standing posture by activating the Lt Ham in relation to the force induced by the arm deceleration, separately to that by the arm acceleration.
