The effect of body configurations on the regulation of human standing was explored by analyzing time series of ground reaction force (GRF) and center of foot pressure (CP). Six postures, which were defined as a function of body lean (forward lean, neutral or backward lean) and body height (erect or bent), were examined in vision and no-vision conditions. The variations of both GRF and CP in the bent postures were greater compared to erect postures. The GRF and CP varied more when the body was leaning forward or backward, compared to the neutral standing. This contrast was enhanced by the removal of vision. The spectral analyses for all tasks revealed that the fluctuation of CP and GRF curves showed anti-phase coupling in the anterior-posterior or in the medial-lateral direction. This finding agreed with previously published empirical studies in which the postural sway in the horizontal plane was regarded as an analog of the inverted pendulum. However, the cross-correlation analyses revealed that CP curve in the anterior-posterior direction was synchronized with the vertical component of GRF as well, and this was manifested in the body lean conditions. Moreover, the coherence analyses showed that this synchrony resides in the frequency band below 8Hz even for neutral standing. These results suggest that the changes of body configuration induced multidirectional control of body sway in maintaining standing equilibrium.
