Orbital Fluctuations in Ground State of YTiO_3 : ^<47, 49>Ti NMR Study(Condensed Matter : Electronic Structure, Electrical, Magnetic and Optical Properties)

^<47, 49>Ti NMR spectra of a single crystal of YTiO_3 have been obtained at 1.5K in the ferromagnetically ordered state under an external field of 3 T. With rotation of the sample in the magnetic field, the spectra show a characteristic angle dependence which reflects Ti 3d orbital ordering. The observed spectra indicate that the Ti 3d quadrupole moment is markedly reduced from that predicted by the orbital ordering model based on the Hartree-Fock and GGA band calculations. The reduction of the quadrupole moment is considered to originate from quantum fluctuations in the t_<2g> orbital states, taking into account that the effective spin-orbit interaction and itinerancy are not strong in this compound.
