Superconductivity in the Ternary Germanide Y_3Pt_4Ge_6(Condensed matter : electronic structure and electrical, magnetic, and optical properties)

A new superconducting ternary germanide, Y_3Pt_4Ge_6, was discovered at the transition temperature of 2.6 K by the electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The magnetization versus magnetic field (M-H) curve indicated that Y_3Pt_4Ge_6 is a type-II superconductor. The lower critical field H_<c1> and the upper critical field H_<c2> were estimated to be 53 Oe and 2.73 kOe. The coherence length ξ(0)_<GL> penetration depth λ(0)_<GL>, and Ginzburg-Landau (GL) parameter κ(0) obtained from these values were 347 Å, 3230 Å, and 9.3, respectively. Specific heat measurements revealed that Y_3Pt_4Ge_6 is a weak-coupling BCS superconductor with an isotropic superconducting gap. The electron-phonon mass enhancement parameter λ_γ was calculated to be 0.19, which was consistent with the weak-coupling limit inferred from the specific jump ΔC_p/γ_nT_c.
