This paper describes recent advance in the detection system for the fast-scanning and phase-sensitive laser probing system for surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices operating in a 2 GHz range. Electric and electro-optic components were examined, and high sensitivity and high signal–noise ratio were achieved in a 2 GHz range without reducing the signal bandwidth. The developed detection system was installed to the laser probe system, and its performance was demonstrated by the SAW field visualisation of a shear-horizontal SAW device operating in a 2 GHz range.
