Effects of RF Filters on Performance of Power Amplifiers

This paper discusses how the reflection coefficient ($S_{11}$) of an RF filter influences the performance of RF power amplifiers (PAs). A class AB PA is designed, and the effect of the filter characteristics on power-added efficiency (PAE) and output power ($P_{\text{out}}$) is investigated by simulation. It is shown that PAE markedly decreases with $S_{11}$ when PA output is nearly saturated and the nonlinearity becomes significant. The ripples caused by multiple reflection are discussed, and it is shown that even when the nonlinearity is insignificant, nonzero $S_{11}$ causes ripples in the passband. Finally, the effect of $S_{11}$ at harmonic frequencies is investigated. It is shown that $S_{11}$ of an RF filter at harmonic frequencies also influences the performance of PAs.
