A technique using multilevel diffractive gratings to suppressthe discrete nature of liquid crystal display (LCD) projection imagesis demonstrated. The multilevel diffractive gratings, having a crosssection similar to a staircase, are fabricated by VLSI processes andplastic molding. Upon positioning the diffractive gratings on thefront surface of the LCD panel, the output light beams emitted fromeach pixel are diffracted mainly into the zeroth and the ±firstdiffraction order light beams of equal energy. The light beamstransformed by the diffractive gratings into orders higher than zerothare able to fill up the dead space between each subpixel, and generatean array of images from each subpixel. As a result, the spatialfrequency of the color subpixel distribution within the whole image isincreased. Accordingly, the grain-like pixel structure in projectionimages is removed, at a slight expense of image resolution.
