An off-axis asymmetrical microlens array light control film(AMA-LCF)for brightness and contrast enhancement in reflective liquid crystal displays(LCDs)is demonstrated. The AMA-LCF is constructed with an off-axis microlens array and laminated to the top surface of the reflective LCDs. The transparent filmlike device can directs incident light into a reflected cone near normal to the display surface, yielding a gain about 1X to 10X of MgO standard-white at the typical viewing region from 0° to 20° . Moreover, glare can be greatly reduced. A multi-direction LCF which can direct the incident light from different directions for viewing has been successfully demonstrated for added brightness and contrast.
