Detection of One-Angstrom Deformation of Au(111)/Mica Cantilever due to Thermal Expansion under the Application of Resonant RF Signal by Tunneling Current

The deformation of an Au(111)/mica cantilever is detected by measuring the tunneling current in scanning tunneling microscopy probe/vacuum/Au-mica cantilever structures under the application of a resonant RF signal with dc sample bias voltage. The tunneling current decreases in a single-clamped structure at a frequency of 1.59 GHz, and it increases in a double-clamped cantilever structure at 766 MHz. The modulations of tunneling current are derived from the deformation of the cantilever due to thermal expansion by Joule loss in a monopole antenna, which consists of the cantilever and the wiring from an RF cable. From the magnitude of the current modulation, the deformation of the cantilever structure is evaluated to be less than 1 Å.
