Formation of High-Purity Silica Ashes Prepared from Rice Husks

High-purity silica was obtained from rice husks by washing with water and acid or alkaline solutions. The silica was characterized by means of chemical analysis, ICP-MS, TG-DTA and SEM. The following results were obtained. (1) The silica ashes with 99.7% purity was obtained by washing rice husks with water and acid solutions. (2) The contents of radioactive impurities such as Th and U were decreased after washing with acid solutions. (3) The density, median diameter and specific surface area of the silica ashes were 2.15∿2.19×10^3kg/m^3,26∿36μm and 255∿300×10^3m^2/kg, respectively. (4) Obtained high purity silica was not crystallized by firing at 1200℃. These results proved that the silica ashes prepared from rice husks is a promising raw material for silicon wafers.
