Ionization of Alkali Metals on Tungsten and Platinum Surfaces

Surface ionization of alkali metals has been studied with mass spectrometers. The instruments used are a Hitachi RMU-5 mass spectrometer(20cm, 90°), a Hitachi RMS-3 mass spectrometer(10cm, 60°)and an experimental instrument(35cm, 90°). The ion sources are similar to those reported by Inghram.The filaments used are of tungsten and platinum. The samples used are LiCl, KOH, KCl, KI, RbCI, and CsCl. The ion current varies for several minutes after a sudden change of filament temperature and becomes stationary. The behaviour depends not only on the filament material, but on the sample.Halogen as well as hydroxyl on the filament surface seem to give different influences on the effective work function of filament material according to their kinds. During this transitional period, the ratio of ion current corresponding to the isotopes also varies, and the precise determination of isotope abundances cannot be expected. The ion current, of cource, varies in accordance with the temperature of the ionization filament, but it does not obey the Saha-Langmuir's equation. A maximum appears at the filament temperature of about 1000°. The temperature, at which the maximum, appears depends slightly on the sorts of alkali metals. This phenomenon can be observed in both cases of single-filament source and triple-filament source.
