An Experimental Mass Spectrometer for the Isotopic Analysis of Uranium

A 90° sector field mass spectrometer with a 350 mm radius of curvature was built for isotopic analysis of uranium. In order to improve the sensitivity, the ion accelerating voltage was raised up to 5kV and the ion current was measured with a vibrating reed amplifier. Two kinds of ion source were employed. One of them was an ordinary ion source for gas analysis and the other was a surface ionization source which could be used not only as a single-filament source, but as a triplefilament source. The natural isotope abundance ratio of uranium was measured with this instrument. By use of the gas analysis ion source, the ratio 235U/238U in UF6 was measured to be 0.738±0.004%. Using the single-filament source and the friple, filament source, the ratio 235U/238U in UO2(NO3)26H2O was measured to be 0.719±0.007% and 0.722±0.004%, respectively. The result obtained in case of UF6 seemed to be effected to some extent by the impurities contained in the sample. This work was supported by the govermental contract.
