• An efficient method for preparing methylthiomethyl <I>p</I>-tolyl sulfone was accomplished by the Pummerer reaction of dimethyl sulfoxide with acetic anhydride followed by treatment of the resulting acetoxymethyl methyl sulfide with sodium <I>p</I>-toluenesulfinate in the presence of sodium acetate in acetic acid.
