The enantiomeric excess of chiral amines was successfully determined by <SUP>1</SUP>H NMR spectral and/or HPLC analysis of the diastereomeric diamides derived from optically active <I>anti</I> head-to-head coumarin dimer and the amines by lactone-ring-opening reaction without any condensing agent. This procedure also proved to be applicable to chiral alcohols.
