Several effective methods for the cleavage of the cyclobutane ring in 7-alkoxytricyclo[6.4.0.0<SUP>2,7</SUP>]dodecan-3-one system are described. These involve reactions with hydriodic acid, with trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate, and with KOH in H<SUB>2</SUB>O–DMSO <I>via</I> a lactone derivative.
