Bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,4-dione and 7-<I>endo</I>-benzyloxy-9-methylenebicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,4-dione were prepared starting from bicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-2-one and 7-<I>endo</I>-benzyloxybicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,9-dione, respectively. The key reaction was the NCS oxidation of the 2,2-ethylenedioxy-4-phenylthiobicyclo[3.3.1]nonanes, derived from the corresponding bicyclo[3.3.1]non-3-en-2-ones.
