According to a thermodynamic analysis the 4-methylpiperidinium salt of (±)-mandelic acid is a conglomerate around room temperature, though the salt forms a racemic compound in the vicinity of the melting point. A successive preferential crystallization in ethanol at 10°C yields both the (+)- and (−)-salts with optical purities of over 95%.
