Infrared spectrum, solubility, and ternary phase diagram of solubility indicated that 1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutylammonium salt (DL-TMB salt) of <I>N</I>-formyl-DL-α-phenylglycine is a conglomerate. In order to resolve DL-TMB salt efficiently, crystallization of D- and L-TMB salts was examined by free energy of critical nucleation in supersaturated solutions. Successive preferential crystallization of DL-TMB salt was experimented at 10 °C for racemic solution in ethanol with the degree of supersaturation of 130%, and D- and L-α-phenylglycine with 100% optical purity were obtained from pure D- and L-TMB salts.
