<I>o</I>-Quinonemethides were prepared by treating <I>o</I>-[1-(alkylthio)alkyl]phenols with a Lewis acid. The Diels–Alder reaction of the resulting <I>o</I>-quinonemethides was also catalyzed by the Lewis acid. Hexahydrocanna-binol was synthesized according to this method.
