<SUP>13</SUP>C and <SUP>15</SUP>N NMR spectra are measured for 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene and its complex with tetrazole in both solution and the solid state. On the basis of the solution and solid state <SUP>15</SUP>N results, an equilibrium involving the half protonated form of the base in the solution of the complex salt was identified. On the other hand, it is found that the <SUP>13</SUP>C results for the solutions are closely similar to those found for the solid state, and are rather insensitive to salt formation.
