Bipyridinetetracarbonylchromium was reduced by sodium metal in tetrahydrofuran. The first stage product of the reduction which showed a spectrum similar to that of sodium bipyridine (Na<SUP>+</SUP>bipy<SUP>−</SUP>) was isolated. The complex was identified as Na[Cr(CO)<SUB>4</SUB>bipy] by elementary analysis. On the basis of the electronic absorption spectrum and the electron spin resonance, the complex formed in the reduction was concluded to be complex coordinated by mononegative ion of bipyridine and should be named sodium 2,2′-bipyridine(1−)-tetracarbonylchromium(0).
