The Preparation and Absorption Spectra of the Geometrical Isomers of Carbonatoglycinatodiamminecobalt(III)

Three geometrical isomers of the [CoCO<SUB>3</SUB>(gly)(NH<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>] complex, the <I>mer</I>(<I>cis</I>-diammine)-, <I>mer</I>(<I>trans</I>-diammine)-, and <I>fac</I>-isomers, have been isolated from a reaction mixture of the <I>cis</I>-[Co(CO<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>(NH<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>]<SUP>−</SUP> ion with glycine by means of a study of the solubility difference and by means of ion-exchange chromatography. These isomers have been characterized by the absorption spectra, the PMR spectra, and the infrared spectra. The absorption spectrum of the <I>mer</I>(<I>trans</I>)-isomer is of special interest, and there is a clear shoulder in the second absorption band region which may be due to the splitting of the second band.
