Preparations and Reactions of <I>N</I>-Benzoyl- and <I>N</I>-Ethoxycarbonylcarbodiimides

The reaction of <I>N</I>-benzoyl-<I>N</I>-<I>t</I>-butylthiourea with either diethyl azodicarboxylate or azodibenzoyl resulted in the formation of benzoyl-<I>t</I>-butylcarbodiimide in 84% and 48% yields, respectively. Dehydrosulfurization of various thioureas was also effected with mercuribenzamide. Benzoyl- or ethoxycarbonylcarbodiimides were obtained in over 80% yields. The reaction of benzoyl-<I>t</I>-butylcarbodiimide with one equivalent each of <I>N</I>-benzoylglycine and glycine ethyl ester led to the formation of <I>N</I><SUP>1</SUP>-benzoyl-<I>N</I><SUP>2</SUP>-<I>t</I>-butyl-<I>N</I><SUP>3</SUP>-(ethoxycarbonyl)methylguanidine in a good yield, no <I>N</I>-benzoylglycylglycine ethyl ester being isolated. When benzoyW-butylcarbodiimide was allowed to react with benzoic acid, dibenzimide and <I>t</I>-butyl isocyanate were formed. Similarly, <I>N</I>-ethoxycarbonylbenzamide and <I>N</I>-benzoylglycine(<I>N</I>′-ethoxycarbonyl)amide were prepared in good yields.
