Ion cyclotron resonance study of ion-molecule reactions in benzene: Mechanism of C2H3+ formation.

Ion-molecule reactions in gaseous benzene, benzene-<I>d</I><SUB>6</SUB>, and their mixtures, particularly the formation process of C<SUB>3</SUB>H<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>+</SUP>, have been investigated using ion cyclotron single- and double-resonance techniques. Double-resonance experiments demonstrated that C<SUB>3</SUB>H<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>+</SUP> is formed by the ion-molecule reaction: C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>7</SUB><SUP>+</SUP>+C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>6</SUB>→C<SUB>3</SUB>H<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>+</SUP>+neutral product. In C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>6</SUB>–C<SUB>6</SUB>D<SUB>6</SUB> mixtures, not only C<SUB>3</SUB>H<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>+</SUP> but also deuterium substituted ions, such as C<SUB>3</SUB>H<SUB>2</SUB>D<SUP>+</SUP> and C<SUB>3</SUB>HD<SUB>2</SUB><SUP>+</SUP>, are formed from C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>7</SUB><SUP>+</SUP>. Quantitative analysis of the double-resonance intensity revealed that C<SUB>3</SUB>H<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>+</SUP> is formed by the decomposition of the intermediate complex of [C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>7</SUB><SUP>+</SUP>–C<SUB>6</SUB>D<SUB>6</SUB>], which is a σ-type complex.
