The tumor of one patient arose from the left sixth cervical nerve root and extended to the paravertebral area, destroying cervical vertebrae. The tumor was dumbbell-shaped, but since it did not extend into the spinal canal, it was removed safely through a lateral cervical approach (Y skin incision).The other patient's tumor arose from the left second cervical nerve root. It had partially destroyed the atlas and axis, and had extended into the parapharyngeal space and the posterior pharyngeal wall. As the tumor occupied the upper cervical vertebrae and was so large, we enlisted the cooperation of two orthopedists. The tumor was removed completly and safely by dividing it into two parts through a posterior approach for the upper cervical regions and a cervical-transpharyngeal midline mandibulotomy for the parapharyngeal regions.
