At the department of neurotology in Saitama Medical School, patients with vertigo, tinnitus or hearing loss showed the high rate of positive serological tests for syphilis: 259 patients among the 9807 who visited our department from August 1981 through December 1986.The patients were into classified 6 groups on the basis of audiograms, clinical course and equilibium tests: standard type, sudden deafness type, Meniere's disease type, vertebro-basilar insufficiency type and paroxysmal positional vertigo type. A typical case from each group is described, and the relationship between syphilis and inner ear disorders is discussed.
