Fluorovideoscopic analysis of pharyngeal stop movement in cleft palate speech.

The articulatory movement of pharyngeal stop, (k) in cleft palate speech was observed by fluorovideoradiography. The articulatory movements and factors which influence the occurrence of this compensatory articulation were investigated.At the time of the stop contact of the tongue with the posterior pharyngeal wall, higher articulation points were observed in adolescents and adults and lower articulation points in children, which suggesting that growth of the articulatory organs, especially the tongue, is important.The influence of preceding and contiguous vowels on the occurrence of pharyngeal stop, was investigated. It occurred rarely with contiguous anterior vowels. Furthermore, it rare occurrence during the production of words and phrases indicates the great instability of this compensatory articulation, which needs speech therapy for its correction.
