The closing function of the eustachian tube was examined by manosonotubometry in 96 ears with otitis media with effusion(OME), 47 ears of patients with cleft palate with OME, 41 ears with chronic otitis media(OMC)and 17 ears with cholesteatoma.1. Eustachian tube closing disturbance was found in 65% of the cases of cholesteatoma, 49% of those of cleft palate with OME, 32% of OMC and 24% of OME cases.2. Attic retraction in OME was more severe in patients with closing disturbance than in those with normal closing function.3. Negative middle ear pressure was frequently induced by "sniffing" in patients with closing disturbance.4. It was suggested that eustachian tube closing disturbance might be the cause of retraction type cholesteatoma.
