Six cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the middle ear.

Six cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the middle ear are presented. The patients ranged in age from 48 to 66 years (mean, 58.7 years old); 5 of them were female.The patients were treated by full dose radiation therapy as a initial treatment. If the patient's general condition permited, we gave one course of chemotherapy concurrently with radiation. We performed radical mastoidectomy in 2 patients and resected the tumor completely by the piece-meal method. Neck dissection and resection of the mandible condyle were also performed. Of the 6 cases, 3 were inoperable, and all these cases died. Of the other 3, 2 patients are alive without disease. One of them was treated with radiotherapy alone and has been tumor-free for 9 years and 7 months. In the other patient, radical mastoidectomy was performed after full dose radiation, and the patient is doing well without recurrence for 7 months.Exfoliative cytology examination performed in 1 patient was useful for early diagnosis and early detection of recurrence.
