Comparison of Vestibular Function of Normal and Deaf Children

Several equilibrium function tests were carried out in all (75) pupils in the Gunma prefectural school for the deaf and in 243 pupils of a standard primary school, aged 6 to 2 years.1. The deaf children had lower scores on deviation tests with eyes closed (walking and stepping tests) and righting reflex tests with eyes opened (standing on one foot and simulating an airplane and a balance board test) than the normal pupils.2. Better scores were obtained by both deaf and normal pupils in the higher grades than in the lower grades.3. Deaf children are less affected by rotatory stimulation than are normal children probbably due to their latent vestibular hypofunction. This finding may be relevant to the fact that the deaf children develop motion sickness less easily than do normal children.4. In generd, no spontaneous nystagmus in the broad sense (fixation nystagmus, gaze nystagmus) or spontaneous nystagmus in the narrow sense occurs in deaf children.5. Improvement of equilibrium function can be expected by training in both normal and deaf children, and the stepping test and standing on one foot simulating an airplane are usuful to monitor the progress.
