A Clinical Study of Malignant Tumor of the Epipharynx

From 1967 to 1983 45 cases of malignant tumor of the epipharynx were treated in our clinic. 32 carcinomas (CA) and 13 malignant lymphomas (ML).1. The male/female ratio was 2.6:1 for CA and 1:0.9 for ML. CA was most common in the 5 and 6th decades, whereas ML showed no specific age distribution.2. The primary sites were the postero-superior wall in 18 cases of CA and the lateral wall in the other 14 cases. The posterosuperior wall was primarily involved in 8 cases of ML and the lateral wall in the remaining 5 cases.3. The most frequent symptoms of CA were nasal symptoms (nasal obstruction, hemorrhagic rhinorrhea, nasal hemorrhage) and next were ear symptoms (impaired hearing, feeling of fullness). The most frequent symptom of ML was also nasal obstruction, followed by throat pain.4. All patients were treated with radiotherapy.5. The net 5-year survival rates were 48% in CA and 43% in ML. The most frequent cause of death was untreatable local recurrence.6. It goes without saying that early diagnosis is important. Chemotherapy and surgery should be added to radiotherapy when indicated.
