Auditory Brainstem Responses in Patients with Cerebellopontine Anale Tumors

Auditory brainstem responses (ABR) were tested in 19 patients with cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumor treated in our clinic from 1981 to 1984.1. The 19 cases were classified into 3 groups: in group 1 (3 cases) waves I, III and V were clearly recorded with prolonged latencies of waves III and V; in group 2 (4 cases) only wave I was recognized; in group 3 (12 cases) no ABR was obtained.2. In group 1 the I-III or I-V interpeak latency interval (IPL) was prolonged or the interaural latency difference for wave V (IT5) was increased.3. The severity of change in the ABR patterns did not always parallel the degree of hearing loss. CPA tumors were suspected when the change of ABR patterns was greater than that of the hearing level.4. There was no consistent relationship between tumor size and ABR patterns or prolongation of latencies.
