The Influence of Processing Conditions on the Separation of PCBs from PCB-contaminated Electrical Equipment using the Vacuum Thermal Recycling Process

Experiments to separate PCBs from PCB-contaminated electrical equipment using the vacuum thermal recycling process were conducted using a pilot scale test plant in order to investigate the effects of processing temperatures and duration on PCB removal. As test samples, varnish pole transformers and high voltage transformers and capacitors were used as representatives of actual low level and high level PCB-contaminated equipment, respectively. Under a constant pressure of 100 Pa, PCB separation experiments were performed at temperatures ranging between 200 and 400 °C and durations from 1 to 3 hours. The results showed that the optimal processing temperature and duration were 300°C and 1 hour for the varnish pole transformers, whereas the high voltage transformers and capacitors required 1 hour at 400°C for optimal processing.
