The inhibitory effects of 2-methyl-4-amino-5-hydroxymethylpyrimidine (OMPm) to pyridoxal for the growth of lactic acid bacteria, Leuconostoc mesenteroides P-60 and Streptococcus faecalis R, appeared to be relatively similar ratio at different levels of pyridoxal in the medium.Among 21 OMPm derivatives, 2-methyl-4-methylamino-5-hydroxymethylpyrimidine had the highest activity (3-19 times as active as OMPm) as an inhibitor of pyridoxal for the growth of Leuc. mesenteroides and S. faecalis. 2-Methyl-4-amino-5-mercaptomethylpyrimidine itself showed some inhibitory activity (about 1 or 2 per cent that of OMPm).
