Painful disorders due to Os subtibiale - Report of two cases.

Two cases complaining of pain of the ankle associated with os subtibiale were reported.Case 1: A 22-year-old male complained of pain of his left ankle after skiing, with no history of any preceding injury. A point immediately below the medial malleolus was tender. Radiographs showed small ossicles just under both medial malleolus, and 99m Tc bone scintigraphy showed intense focal uptake in the left submalleolar region at the site of os subtibiale. Stress X-ray and arthrography showed no abnormal findings.Case 2: A 17-year-old boy complained of aching of his left ankle after hop, step and jump. There was slight swelling, subcutaneous bleeding and tenderness similar to case 1, immediately below the medial malleolus. Radiographs of the ankles showed a small ossicle just under his left medial malleolus but normal medial malleolus of his right ankle.Additionally, both cases had flat feet and a tendency to hyperpronation in a standing legheel alignment. Medial heel wedges were effective for pain relief of the ankles.
