A case report of fat embolism syndrome with various neurological signs for a long period.

A 20 years old man who had a full recovery after the coma state for five weeks from fat embolism syndrome was reported. He had the fracture of the left femur by motorcycle accident. He developed a consciousness disturbance following lucid interval of twenty-one hours.CT was performed revealing no intracranial hematoma but showing diffuse brain edema. He had little respiratory symptom. Petechiae on the palpebral conjunctiva, neck, axilla and thigh developed in a few days after the accident. Retinal lesion consisted of cotton-wool spot small hemorrhages and edema.He regained his consciousness on the 37th day after the injury. At the same time various neurological signs, constructional apraxia, unilateral spatial neglect, right-left disorientation, finger agnosia and alexia with agraphia appeared but no paresis was present. And then CT revealed the slight atrophy of the frontal lobe. His IQ in WAIS revealed low score.Ten months after the injury he recovered completely and began to work as a clerk at the Ministry of Defence.
