An Experience of Surgical Treatment of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome.

We reported twelve feet with Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome in ten cases that were treated operatively. The patients were treated between June 1985 and March 1990. Examination revealed the sensory disturbance was in the distribution of the medial and the lateral plantar nerve in six feet, the calcaneal branch in two feet, the medial plantar nerve, the lateral plantar nerve, the medial plantar nerve and the calcaneal branch in one foot respectively. The causes of entrapment were direct compression by medial edge of the aponeurosis of the abductor hallucis muscle at the entrance of the plantar nerve into the foot in five feet, ganglion in three feet, tenosynovitis, pes valgus after calcaneal fracture, malformation of the calcaneous and ganglion, postsurgical scar in one foot respectively. Postoperative course of all cases were uneventful and there was no case of recurrence. We believe that the medial edge of the abductor hallucis muscle is very important as the cause of entrapment.
